Magician at a Christmas Party…Get MUCH higher attendance!
This party tip is short, sweet, very effective, and…if you haven’t tried it, you probably won’t, so feel free to stop reading. If you have tried it, you already know it works!
When December rolls around, you will rarely see me travel. With that being the most in-demand month of the year, I have to keep my events concentrated. I primarily do magic shows in Charlotte, NC, where I’m based, because I’ve had as many as 20 events in the first three weeks of December. There are numerous times where I’ve done as many as three events in one night. As a corporate magician, I see attendance vary drastically at company parties. If you’re disappointed with the turnout, there are some things you can do.
Where is everybody?
You have the decorations, food and drinks. Why are you not getting the attendance you want?
This might hurt a little.
If your party is on the weekend, it’s likely a conflict with one of several other events that your potential guests are being invited to. These can be school events for the kids, family get togethers, company parties, corporate events, or church functions.
If we put your party side by side with all the possibilities I just listed, what makes people want to attend your party over the others?
One possible solution.
Ok, call me biased, but if you want to instantly stand out, book good entertainment, specifically a good magician. That’s a much bigger draw than the typical get-together, which is likely what most of your competitors will be doing. Now, to help add fuel to the fire, my clients send out links to some of my videos, especially my appearances on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. I’ve had clients tell me they saw a 30% increase from their typical attendance.
Now, that’s all fine and good. But, it’s not always a guarantee. Some people have events they just can’t get out of, and wouldn’t even try. For example, if some has a kid in a school Christmas play, no one you book is going to get them out of being there for their child.
So…how do you fix that?
Easy solution!
Have the party Monday-Thursday. It’s really that simple. If you think having a party on Friday or Saturday is a good idea, you’re right…..January-September. People love a party on the weekend. BUT!! If you’re one out 3 parties your guests have been invited to for the same night, you’re essentially flipping a three sided coin.
I can tell you from 20+ years as a professional magician and doing hundreds of magic shows at Christmas parties, the most consistently well attended parties I’ve ever seen in December have been during the week. The days are simply much less in-demand for everyone. I know this because you can pick any weekend date in December and I’ve already received anywhere from 10-200 inquiries about it. You read that right. I receive as much as 200 inquiries for single dates in December.
It may be tough to take the plunge of booking on a weeknight. Remember, people love a party on ANY day! Think of people who hate Mondays that have an invite to a party that night. Of course they’re going!
A Bonus for Everyone! (yes, monetary!)
Because weeknight parties typically don’t have competition with other parties, you will spend typically anywhere from 30%-50% less as far as overall cost goes. That includes venue, catering, venue staff, tech rentals, DJs, decorations, event entertainment options, name it, it’s probably less expensive on a weeknight. In fact, I personally know magicians in North Carolina that have a significant drop in price in the middle of the week.
Give a weekday a shot. If you don’t think it’s amazing, there’s always next year. But fair warning…the majority of clients that try this, never turn back.
