I need more Myrtle Beach in my life!
A few times a year, I get one of my favorite calls.
“Someone’s wanting to book a magician for an event in Myrtle Beach and wants you.”
I honestly can’t be more thrilled when that happens! Myrtle beach is one of my favorite places in the world. Mainly because it’s where I spent most of my summer vacations. However, when I get the chance to vacation and perform at the same time, that’s living the dream! Now, I’ll be performing in Myrtle Beach again next month, but I’d love to share about a recent performance.
From the booking agent…
I had gotten the call talking about a big corporate event in Myrtle Beach and that they were deciding between one other magician and me.
Side note, even at a 50/50 chance, I’m one of those people that likes to be “cautiously optimistic.” I mean, I do voice overs where I’m one out of 150 voice actors that they’re auditioning. A 50% chance is nicer, but I’m still cautious.
Anyway, after speaking with corporation’s committee, the agent came back for a second phone call. He said the decision was unanimous…they went with the other magician. Kidding, they went with me.
The Marriott Myrtle Beach Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes
Now, my family and I typically stay at the Price Resort in Cherry Grove, just north of Myrtle Beach. The reason is because we love to fish off a pier and having a pier literally attached to the hotel is big plus.
Well, this place may not have a pier, but it had everything else that you could possibly imagine. The online reviews definitely speak for themselves, so it’s no surprise that the ballroom for the show was top notch! Trust me, the picture doesn’t do it justice.
I got in the room around 3PM for the soundcheck, and with the awesome DJ in the room, everything was very smooth!
Is my shirt on inside out?
I have to say, for the first few minutes of the show, I got an interesting response from the audience. It was almost like they wanted to laugh and have fun, but they were also being cautiously optimistic. I honestly wondered if there was something wrong with my appearance. I figured I would just move forward. Turns out, there was something going on (not with my appearance). But, I don’t want to get ahead of myself.
Unexpected funny moment…
The show continued and there were some fun moments that were definitely new. One moment, seen in the picture, was when I brought a guy up on stage to assist with a card trick. Right as he stepped on stage, his phone rang, and me being me, I insisted he answer it. This led to my favorite 5 minutes in the whole show, because I had no idea where I was going with any of it. We went back and forth, with me talking on the phone, then the volunteer. It turned into some of the funniest dialogue I’ve ever had on stage.
What’s funny is, the trick I did was actually the same one I was going to do. However, just adding another person into the mix, who happened to be on the phone, made this a hit.
This is why I always look for these random, off-script moments in the show. It turned out being the most talked moment of the entire night!
The show ended with a very warm standing ovation from the 200 plus people in the room. As always, I stayed after and met with as many people as possible. Did a few close-up tricks, which just rounded out the evening to make it an overall great experience.
Why the awkward laughing?
The client approached me after the show. I didn’t want to bring up the audiences behavior during the first few minutes of the performance, but I really wanted to ask the question. Lucky for me, she obliged.
“You probably noticed, but people felt a little awkward in the beginning.”
Now, I’m not going to lie, so I just told her, “Yes, I was going to ask you about that.” Her response floored me.
“We have spent a lot of money on entertainment over the years just to have it flop. This is a tough crowd and with the laughter I heard, you were, without a doubt, the right choice.”
Needless to say, that made my night!
Am I leaving anything out?
The agent called me the following day and I still don’t completely know how I feel about this. I’m just glad it worked.
He said, “I didn’t want to tell you before the show, but that is a really tough audience. I’ve booked a lot of good entertainment for them and it hasn’t gone well. The client said you were a major hit and they want to have you back!”
I think ultimately, I’m happy I wasn’t told. If you don’t tell me that I’m performing for a tough audience, then I’m not. Bring it on! 🙂
Are you in the Myrtle Beach area?
I’m coming back in about a month for another show. While this is a private event, I’m notorious for doing multiple events in any specific area that I’m in. Since I’m already there, it’s like you’re booking a local event. It’s a great way to cut cost in booking me. If you’re in Myrtle Beach and interested in having a magician for an event, just contact us here ASAP and tell us about your event.
